Diversity and Identity

“I will not have my life narrowed down.
I will not bow down to somebody else’s whim or to someone else’s ignorance.”

– bell hooks

You’re wondering, “Who Am I?”

When you look in the mirror, your reflection brings more questions than answers. You’ve played a part your whole life, but it no longer fits. Social situations are more and more uncomfortable because you can no longer act as if you are someone you’re not.

In all your glorious complexity, the time has come for you to explore who you truly are.

Early on, parents, friends, teachers, and relatives labeled you as one thing or another. Our gender, race, sexuality, and more usually get decided FOR us rather than by us. Society is so ready to put us in a box that we can spend our whole lives figuring out if it’s OUR box.

Here’s the secret: There is no box.

You are a unique individual.

Within gender, there are fluid possibilities. Self-expression is your right.

Racial diversity is a construct, and individuals have different traditions and backgrounds within it. You can define these for yourself.

Sexual attractions can change throughout a lifetime or be stable but non-conforming. You have the right to define yourself.

You are courageous to consider claiming your authentic self.

“Our feelings are our most genuine paths to knowledge.”
– Audre Lorde

I’m an ally on your journey.

I am committed to empathy, congruence, and unconditional positive regard for you as a complete human being, worthy of love and care equally to anyone else.

As you bravely explore your true self, perhaps for the first time, I will accompany you by observing and reflecting on the thoughts, feelings, hopes, and dreams that I hear and see as most in sync with your values, beliefs, and the person you want to be.

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of helping people from diverse histories, identities, genders, sexualities, and races heal and move forward with intention. I am aware of the risks you experience by having an identity oppressed and marginalized by the dominant culture. It is essential to understand and fully embrace who you are to navigate these challenges confidently and courageously.

It will be my honor to join you on your journey.
